Richard Gabey earned three letters with the Mariners as a swimmer and guided the squad with his many individual victories during his tenure at Kings Point. A team captain, Richard won the 100-yard Freestyle and 300-yard Individual Medley events at the Senior Metropolitan Championships held outdoors in the fall of 1946 after being at sea for six months. During the indoor seven-meet regular season, Richard competed in 16 events, compiling an impressive record of 1O first places, three second places, and three third places. A year later he captured the 300-meter Individual Medley and the 100-meter Freestyle at the AAU Swimming Championships at Sunset Park, NY. In March of
1948, Richard's senior year at the Academy, he competed at the Eastern Intercollegiate Championship at New Haven placing second in the 300 Individual Medley. He also swam the 300-meter Individual Medley at the 1948 U.S. Olympic Trials. Prior to his accomplishments at Kings Point, the former Stuyvesant High School standout won the 200-yard Freestyle Championship and the Metropolitan AAU crown in the same event.
