KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Nov. 9, 2018) – The USMMA wrestling team will open up the 2018-19 season this weekend at the Roger Williams Invitational in Rhode Island. The Mariners have a total of 15 events scheduled for the regular season over the next four months, with hopes of sending wrestlers through to a 16th event - the NCAA National Championship meet in March.
After the Roger Williams Invite this weekend, Merchant Marine will take part in the New York State Championships, hosted by Cornell University on Sunday, Nov. 18. That will be followed by York College of Pennsylvania's New Standard Corp. Invitational Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
The first home event of the season will be the annual Mariner Duals on Sunday, Dec. 9. The Mariners will welcome in The College of New Jersey, New York University and Nassau Community College for a morning and afternoon full of wrestling at the Liebertz Gymnasium.
A dual meet against Baldwin Wallace University at O'Hara Hall on Friday night, Dec. 14, is up next, before the Mariners close out the 2018 potion of the schedule at the Long Island Open on Saturday, Dec. 15, hosted by Nassau Community College in Garden City, N.Y.
The New Year opens with back-to-back-to-back Saturdays at Centennial Conference opponents, starting with the North/South Duals, hosted by Ursinus College on Saturday, Jan. 5, in Collegeville, Pa., where USMMA will take on the hosts in a Centennial dual, and other teams that have yet to be announced.
The next weekend, the Mariners will be at Muhlenberg College for the "Mule Duals" on Saturday, Jan. 12, where they will face the hosts in a Centennial Dual, as well as Middlesex Community College and Scranton.
A trip to Gettysburg on Saturday, Jan. 19, will be the first conference tri of the season, as Merchant Marine will take on the host Bullets as well as McDaniel College.
Four-time reigning Centennial Champions Stevens Institute will visit O'Hara Hall on Tuesday, Jan. 22. Then the Mariners will travel up to Northfield, Vt., and the campus of Norwich University for the Annual All-Academy Championships on Saturday, Jan. 26.
February opens with a trip to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore for a Centennial tri on Saturday, Feb. 2. That's followed by the rivalry matchup against Coast Guard on Wednesday night, Feb. 6, up in New London, Conn.
The Mariners will then host the 2019 Centennial Conference Championships on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019. More information on that Championship meet will be available on www.USMMASports.com as the event draws nearer.
The NCAA Mideast Regional Championship Meet is scheduled for Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 23-24, up at SUNY Brockport. At that meet, the Mariners are hopeful to have wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will take place March 8-9 in Roanoke, Va.
The Centennial Conference announced the Preseason Coaches Poll for wrestling recently and the Mariners were picked by the conference head coaches to finish the 2018-19 season in third place with 35 points in the poll. They did receive one first place vote.
Stevens was unanimously picked to win its fifth-straight championship, garnering 49 points in the poll, while Gettysburg earned second place with 38 points.
