Both Men’s & Women’s Cross Country Finish Second, First Among DIII Teams, At SJC Invite

KINGS PARK, N.Y. (Oct. 13, 2018) – The USMMA men's & women cross country teams both finished in second place at the 19th Annual St. Joseph's-L.I. Invitational out at Sunken Meadow State Park in Suffolk County on Saturday. Both teams were also first place among Division III teams, as the only teams to finish above the Mariners were the men's and women's teams from Division I Fordham University. 

On the men's side, Merchant Marine scored 70 team points and had all of its first five runners finish in the top-20. Freshman Lucas Jordan (Littleton, Colo.) came in ninth in the 8K race with a time of 28:30.3, while classmate Nicholas Arima (Honolulu, Hawaii) was literally right behind him, just three-tenths of a second behind in 10th place in 28:30.6. 

Fellow plebe Aodhan Meyer (South Kingston, R.I.) placed 14th with a time of 28:51.5, and seniors Connor Cole (Alpharetta, Ga.) and John Robertson (Pfafftown, N.C.) were back-to-back in 18th (28:57.9) and 19th place (28:58.4), respectively. 

The Mariner women scored 60 team points, just two behind DI Fordham. Freshman Robin King (Raymond, Ohio) won the 5K race outright with a time of 19:35.4. Classmate Brooke Jorstad (La Crosse, Wis.) came in sixth place in 20:34.2, while fellow plebe Anna Grafton (Belmont, N.H.) placed 11th in 20:55.4. 

Rounding out the top-five finishers for USMMA was junior Carissa Buonerba (Atlanta, Ga.) in 19th in 21:22.1 and classmate Anna Lewis (Lakehead, Calif.) in 23rd with a time of 21:28.6.
