DANBURY, Conn. (April 5, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team swept non-conference opponent Western Connecticut State on Thursday afternoon, 9-0, at the Colonials' Westside Courts. With the win, the Mariners move to 4-5 on the season, while WestConn drops to 0-3.
In doubles action, the top flight of freshmen Barry Booth (Spanish Fort, Ala.) and Andrew Carey (Moseley, Va.) finished first with an 8-2 win, followed by senior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and junior Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) at #2 with an 8-4 triumph. The #3 pairing of senior Matthew Schwartz (Dunkirk, Md.) and junior Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) secured the doubles sweep for USMMA with an 8-6 victory.
Schwartz at #6 was the first singles flight to end, as he claimed a 6-1, 6-1 win, followed by Booth clinching the match for the Mariners with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. The remainder of the action all went Merchant Marine's way – Zakrevski's 6-0, 6-2 triumph at #4, Carey's 6-0, 6-3 win at #2, Deeter's three-set thriller [6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8)] at #5 and McDonough's close 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) win at the top flight.
