Tennis Opens Season With 8-1 Win Over Otterbein In Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 7, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy tennis team triumphed over Otterbein University, 8-1, on Wednesday night at the USTA National Campus in Florida. The Mariners open the season 1-0, while the Cardinals fall to 5-2. 

USMMA swept the doubles action, with sophomore Justin McGaffigan (Quincy, Mass.) and junior Branden Deeter (Truckee, Calif.) winning first at #3, 8-0. The next match to finish was the top flight of freshmen Barry Booth (Spanish Fort, Ala.) and Andrew Carey (Moseley, Va.), who won 8-4, before senior Jake McDonough (Wilmington, N.C.) and junior Daniel Zakrevski (Forest Hills, N.Y.) also claimed an 8-4 victory at #2. 

In singles action, the two teams split the first two decisions, with Booth winning at #3 (6-2, 6-0) and Otterbein's freshman Jared Deel at #6 earning the Cards only point on the night. 

McDonough clinched the win for Merchant Marine at #1 with a 6-2, 6-2, triumph. This was followed by wins by Carey at #2 (6-2, 6-3), Zakrevski at #4 (6-2, 6-3) and McGaffigan at #5 (6-3, 6-4). 

The Mariners are back in action tomorrow, Thursday, March 8, with two matches. The first is against Ursinus beginning at 8 a.m. and the second is at night against Regis (Mass.) starting at 7:30 p.m.
