HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. (Sept. 11, 2019) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team defeated non-conference opponent Centenary College, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Cyclones' Reeves Field. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 3-1 on the year, while Centenary falls to 1-5 in defeat.
The Mariners scored two quick goals in the affair, as senior Alex Madonna (Gibsonia, Pa.) found the twine in the lower right of the net in the second minute and classmate Nick Roros (Northport, N.Y.) scored his second goal in as many games in the seventh minute when he converted at the near post after a long cross by sophomore David Kelly (Lutherville, Md.) from the far side.
A pair of plebes rounded out the scoring for USMMA – Jack Remark (Pittsburgh, Pa.) made it 3-0 in the 42nd minute, assisted by sophomore Liam Cashmore (Silverdale, Wash.) and Connor Damaré (Slidell, La.) closed out the scoring in the 88th minute when he cashed in after a pass from junior Hunter West (Southampton, N.Y.).
Senior Matthew Milner (Mount Airy, Md.) earned the victory between the pipes, his third of the season, as he made five saves over the 90 minutes of action.
The Mariners outshot Centenary, 19-12, on the afternoon, including a 10-6 edge in shots on goal.
The Cyclones' only tally came in the 77th minute by freshman Juan Restrepo after a long cross from sophomore Chris Spataro. Sophomore keeper Paul Litrenta finished with six saves for Centenary.
