KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Dec. 11, 2018) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team is in the win column! The Mariners won their first game of the season Tuesday night against the City College of New York Beavers, 68-61, at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners are now 1-6, while the CCNY drops to 1-7.

The Beavers got off to an early 4-0 lead on a layup and a jump shot by junior Ty-Ler Banks, but the Mariners scored five unanswered to take a 5-4 lead. After a couple of back-and-forth baskets, both teams were tied at 12 with 9:28 to play in the first half. After the teams were tied again, this time at 15-all at 7:28, that's when the Mariners took off.
Merchant Marine scored six unanswered on a pair of three-pointers by junior Michael Bell (Ashburn, Va.) and Morsberger go ahead 21-15 and they led going into the half, 31-24.
The Mariners scored the first four points of the second half on back-to-back layups by Barnes and Walsh. After CCNY senior Mike White hit a three-pointer with 15:32 to play, the Mariners lead was still only seven at 38-31 with 15:32 left in the game.
The Mariners then went on a 15-5 run including an alley-oop dunk by Washington on a fast break on a beautiful feed from Green. After leading 53-36 at 8:11, the game was all but sealed.
CCNY would cut the deficit to eight with 59 seconds to play, and an uncontested layup by White with six seconds left was the closest the Beavers would come in the second half in the Mariners seven-point win.
Merchant Marine won the rebound battle, 38-32. The Mariners were also 11-for-21 from the free-throw line compared to 2-for-6 for the Beavers.
For CCNY, White scored 15 points, while Banks added 14 with eight rebounds and junior Romello Rashad contributed 11 points.
