Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (Feb. 15, 2018) – The USMMA men's basketball team lost on the road at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, 70-58, on Thursday night at the Bears' Hill Center. The Mariners' record falls to 9-14 (7-12 Skyline) after the setback, while SJC improves to 10-15 (9-11 Skyline).

Freshman Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) led Merchant Marine with 16 points on the night, while sophomore Eric Sobocinski (Southampton, N.J.) added 11. Freshman James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) chipped in with seven points and three other Mariners scored six points each – junior David Washington (Frisco, Texas), who also had a team-best nine rebounds, sophomore Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) and senior Robbie Kennedy (Spring Lake, N.J.), who led the players off the USMMA bench.

The two teams swapped the lead a total of four times in the opening half, with the Bears jumping out early with the first five points of the game before Merchant Marine stormed back with six-straight to take a 6-5 advantage at 14:22. The lead hit as high as four points thanks in part to a pair of three-pointers by Sobocinski, the second of which put the Mariners ahead 12-8 at 11:51. A 9-2 run by the hosts allowed SJC to claim a 17-14 lead at 7:47, but a layup by Kennedy followed by a trey by Walsh gave USMMA the lead back, 19-17 at 5:41. However, the Bears finished the first half on a torrid 14-2 run and took a 31-21 lead into the halftime break.

St. Joseph's advantage hit a game-high 13 points early in the second, but the Mariners came back to within just five points, 55-50 with 6:18 to play. SJC scored the next seven points to take a 12-point lead and Merchant Marine was unable to threaten late.

The Bears' sophomore Stephane Etheart recorded a double-double, as he led all players in the game with 19 points and 13 rebounds. His twin brother Sebastien Etheart contributed 14 points and six boards and tied for the game-high with six assists and led everyone on the night with four steals, while classmate Dimitri Sirakis also scored 14 points.

The Mariners will close out the 2017-18 season this Saturday, Feb. 17, on the road at Skyline opponent Old Westbury. Tipoff against the Panthers is scheduled for 12-noon at OW's Clark Athletic Center.
