BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 30, 2017) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team lost its road, Skyline Conference contest up at Sarah Lawrence College, 79-73, on Thursday night at the Gryphons' Campbell Sports Complex. In defeat, the Mariners fall to 2-1 (1-1 Skyline) on the young season, while SLC improves to 1-6 (1-2 Skyline) with the victory.
Freshman Seth Barnes (Chillicothe, Ohio) led the Mariners with 19 points, while two other players scored in double-figures for USMMA – senior George Hatzioannides (Oakland Gardens, N.Y.) had 16 and freshman James Walsh (Huntington, N.Y.) contributed 12 off the bench. Classmate Jesse Neloms (Memphis, Tenn.) added eight points, while senior Robbie Kennedy (Spring Lake, N.J.) and junior David Washington (Frisco, Texas) both had six points each and sophomores Connor Green (Flower Mound, Texas) and Michael Bell (Ashburn, Va.) rounded out the Mariners' scorers with three points apiece.
The first seven minutes were back-and-forth, as the score was tied up on four separate occasions until Merchant Marine went on a 12-0 run to take a 32-20 lead at 8:08. The advantage got as high as 15 points, 40-25, at 1:59 of the first and the Mariners took a 42-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Gryphons slowly kept chipping away at the USMMA lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half and eventually tied the score at 60-60 at 9:11 before taking a three-point lead less than a minute later. The Mariners would grab one more lead after a 4-0 run, but Sarah Lawrence took a lead they wouldn't surrender on a pair of free throw that made the score 65-64 at 7:37.
The hosts' advantage grew to seven points, 73-66, at 4:00, but Merchant Marine would not go quietly, as the Mariners fought back to within just one point after a 7-1 run made it 74-73 with just 1:18 to go. USMMA was unable to convert in the final minute and the Gryphons made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
For SLC, sophomore BJ Sanders led all players on the night with 21 points, while senior Malin Segal and freshman Enike Anyia both scored 19 points apiece. Anyia also brought down a game-high 12 rebounds for a double-double.
The Mariners will not compete this weekend and will return to action on Tuesday night, Dec. 5, up at arch-rival Coast Guard. The two teams will square off with a point towards the overall standings in the 2017-18 Superintendents' Trophy on the line. Tipoff against the Bears is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at USCGA's Roland Hall in New London, Conn.
