Complete Game Notes (PDF)

Setting the Scene... The USMMA men's basketball team wraps up a three-game road swing Wednesday night against Drew in a Landmark Conference showdown in Madison, NJ.  Merchant Marine has dropped back-to-back games and four of its last five heading into its clash with the Rangers.  Conversely, Drew has won four of its last five and is coming off of wins against conference rivals Scranton and Goucher.

Series History... Merchant Marine holds a 9-2 advantage in the all-time series against Drew, including sweeping the season series last year.  USMMA outlasted the Rangers in double overtime in the first Landmark Conference game of the year and rounded out the 2011-12 season with a 96-74 victory on the road.

Chasing 1,000... Reed Buck (Lawrenceville, GA), in just his third season at USMMA, is pursuing the elite 1,000 point club.  He currently stands at 963 points in a Mariner uniform, just 37 points short of the 1,000 milestone.  Buck is the reigning Landmark Conference Player of the Year and leads the league in scoring this season with 19.6 points per game.

"Double" Trouble... Nick Sergio (Patchogue, NY) has come on strong as of late and registered a double-double in back-to-back games.  Sergio finished the Mariners' meeting with Juniata with 12 points and 12 rebounds while posting 11 points and 11 rebounds versus #24 Stevens.  Sergio leads the Mariners with four double-doubles in 2012-13.

Cleaning the Glass... Merchant Marine ranks first in the Landmark Conference in rebounding and rebounding margin this season.  USMMA pulls down 41.6 boards per game and is out-rebounding opponents by an average of 6.8 boards per game.  Nationally, the Mariners are 34th in NCAA Division III in rebounding margin.

As Simple as Shooting... The key to USMMA victories in 2012-13 has been a simple formula; have a higher field goal percentage than your opponent.  Merchant Marine is 8-0 when accomplishing that goal while notching a 1-8 mark when posting a lower field goal percentage than its opposition.

Up Next... The Mariners return to action again this Saturday for a conference meeting with #10 Catholic.  Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm in the second game of a double header.
