KINGS POINT, N.Y. (April 3, 2018) – For the fourth-straight week, USMMA freshman Joe Raab (Edwardsburg, Mich.) has earned weekly recognition from the Skyline Conference, as the league announced on Monday that he was selected as its Rookie of the Week. Also taking home accolades by the Skyline for their efforts last week were juniors Jesse Reinebold (Granger, Ind.) and Andrew Spinnenweber (Pasadena, Md.), who earned spots on the weekly honor roll. Together, the trio helped lead the Mariners to a 3-1 week (2-1 Skyline) in four contests last week.
Raab – who has already been a two-time Skyline Pitcher of the Week this season (March 12 & 19) – earns his second-consecutive Rookie of the Week honor, as he threw yet another complete-game victory for Merchant Marine last week, his third-straight. In his outing against St. Joseph's-L.I. this past Saturday, March 31, the rookie tossed nine strong innings, allowing four runs (just two earned) on five hits with 11 strikeouts and limiting the Golden Eagles to just a .142 batting average. It was the third time in four starts that Raab has had double-digit strikeouts.
Reinebold led the Mariners with seven RBIs on the week, was second on the squad with a .400 batting average and third with four runs scored. He had two RBIs and two runs scored in both of the first two games of the week and then led the Mariners with three RBIs in the 7-4 road Skyline win in the first game at St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday.
The conference leader in strikeouts, Spinnenweber was dominant in the Mariners' tough 2-1 road loss at St. Joseph's-L.I. in the second game on Saturday afternoon. He hurled the complete game, six innings and gave up just two runs on six hits while fanning a career-high 13 Golden Eagle batters. It was his third-straight outing with double-digit strikeouts.
Both Raab and Spinnenweber rank among the nation's leading pitchers in Division III, as Raab is third in the country with a 0.60 walks and hits per innings pitched (WHIP), Spinnenweber ranks fourth with 15.35 strikeouts per nine innings and both of them are tied for fifth in the nation with three complete games. Raab is 11th with 4.37 hits allowed per nine innings, 14th with a 12.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio, 15th with five victories and 16th with a 0.77 ERA, while Spinnenweber ranks 12th with a 13.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio, 14th with a 0.74 WHIP and 19th with 54 total strikeouts.
Also among the DIII leaders is senior Jacob Sithong (Orlando, Fla.), whose 0.88 stolen bases per game rank 14th and his 14 total stolen bases are good for 26th.
Tuesday's home game against the College of New Rochelle has been postponed due to inclement weather. No make-up date has been announced yet. Next on the schedule for the Mariners is a home Skyline doubleheader this coming Saturday, April 7, against Old Westbury. First pitch is scheduled for 12-noon at Lower Roosevelt Field.
