Mariners Split With Coast Guard In Walk-Off Fashion

Kim Saxton hit a walk-off single in game one to help give the Mariners the doubleheader split against Coast Guard. USMMA won game one, 3-2 but fell in game two, 3-0. With the split, the Superintendents Trophy will end in a 6.5-6.5 tie. Jen Swanson led the Mariners in game one going 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Karen Taylor led the way in game two, giving up only four hits and fanning out 12 batters.
In game one, the Mariners took an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. Nicole Kogel led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch and later came into score on a one out double to left field by Swanson. Swanson advanced to third on a fly ball to right field by Jess LaValley and scored on a wild pitch.
The Bears pulled within one run in the top of the fifth on a solo homerun to left field by Becky Miller, 2-1. Coast Guard tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth on a RBI single to center field by Jamie Kim.
The Mariners would win the game on a two out single to left field by Saxton to score LaValley from third and end the game in walk-off fashion. LaValley was stellar on the mound, finishing the game with 12 strikeouts and giving up only five hits.
In game two, Taylor threw a great game for the Mariners but came up just short of the sweep. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a RBI double to left center by Colleen Denny. Coast Guard would later add two more runs to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Kim would hit two RBI single to right field.
The Bears pitcher, Hayley Feindel was able to keep the Mariners in check by striking out a career high 16 batters for the victory despite the Mariners out hitting the Bears.
The Mariners end the 2009 season with an overall record on 19-17 and will now look for an ECAC bid.
