Football Falls To Hobart On The Road

Geneva, NY - The United States Merchant Marine Academy football team fell to Liberty League opponent Hobart, 28-0. The Statesmen were able to put one touchdown on the board every quarter in the victory. Junior Karl Heimbrock and sophomore Chris Adema led the way for the Mariners.
 
USMMA falls to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in the Liberty League while the Statesmen improve to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the Liberty League. 
 
Quarterback Derrick Ventre (8-24) was good for 66 yards and rushed four times for 14 yard on the afternoon. Heimbrock finished with 41 rushing yards to lead the ground attack. He also grabbed two passes for 12 yards. Adema led the receiving core with three catches for 38 yards. Sophomore Kevin Stapf finished with eight tackles with two being for a loss to lead the defense while senior Scott Purcell added six tackles and two sacks. Five other Mariners added five tackles on the day. 
 
Kyle Tritten led Hobart with 46 rushing yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Doug Vella finished the game with 105 yards while quarterback Preston Earl threw for 62 yards and one touchdown. Tyler Vincent led all receivers with three catches for 38 yards and one touchdown. Kyle O’Laughlin led the defense for Hobart with 10 tackles and one forced fumble while Mike Arduini added seven tackles and one sack. The Statesmen defense was able to finish the game with their second shutout against the Mariners in the last two years.
 
Hobart put their first points on the board with 1:22 minutes left in the quarter. Earl threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Vincent to take a 7-0 lead.
 
In the second quarter the Statesmen capped a four play 58 yard drive with a 3-yard rushing touchdown by Tritten. With the touchdown, Hobart would head into halftime with a 14-0 lead.
 
With 8:16 left in the third quarter, Hobart put up its third touchdown of the game, 21-0. Andrew Marlier rushed for a 7-yard touchdown to finish a 10 play 75 yard drive.
 
Andrew Miller finished the Statesmen scoring in the fourth quarter. With 13:36 remaining in the game Miller rushed for a 10-yard touchdown to put Hobart up 28-0 and they would hold on for the shutout over the Mariners.
 
The Mariners will return to action on Saturday, November 7th when they host Union College in their final home of the season.  Game time is slated for 2:30 pm in Kings Point, NY. Last time the two teams met, the Dutchmen won, 42-14. Union leads the series 7-5-1.
