Men’s Basketball Hosting Wesley in 1st Round of NCAA Tournament

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – On Monday morning, the NCAA
Selection Show released its field of participants for the road to the Division
III national title. The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men’s basketball team will
begin its national championship journey at home when its hosts Wesley College
in the first round on Friday at 8 p.m.
Franklin and Marshall College will play SUNY Oneonta at the
Liebertz Gymnasium on Friday at 6 p.m. The winner of that game will face off
against the victor of the USMMA-Wesley contest on Saturday at 7 p.m. for the
right to advance to the Sectionals next weekend.
The Mariners harbor an incredible 23-4 overall record and
were 12-2 in the Landmark Conference. They are ranked second in the Atlantic
Region, behind William
Paterson University.
USMMA is currently ranked 26th in the nation according to the Top-25
poll from D3hoops.com. The 2009-10 squad’s 23 victories are third-most in
school history and this will mark the eighth time Kings Point finds its name on
an NCAA bracket. The last time was at the conclusion of the 2002-03 campaign.
Junior forward Matt
Hueber (Alexandria, Va.) is slotted 61st in the
country with 9.2 rebounds per game. Sophomore forward Jon Snead (Garden City, N.Y.) is currently ranked 76th
among NCAA Division III shooting 83.1% from the free throw line. Senior guard Ryan Samuel (Cedar Hill, Texas)
is 115th in that category (81.5%). As a team, Kings Point is fifth
in the country in scoring defense (57.4). Its scoring margin of 14.5 is 10th
among Division III, while its free-throw percentage is 13th (76.1%).
Moreover, the Merchant Marine Academy finds itself 14th overall in
the win-loss percentage category (84.0%). Kings Point’s 8.5 three-pointers per
game ranks 19th in the nation.
