Mariners Fall In ECAC Tournament To Ramapo

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy baseball team lost to Ramapo College, 7-2 in the ECAC Tournament semifinals. The loss ends the Mariners 2009 season but not after the team left its mark in the school record books. Mike Bybee led the way for the Mariners going 3-for-4 with one run batted in and one walk. David May pitched in going 1-for-4 with a solo homerun.
The Roadrunners took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Dimperio single to second to plate Mauriello. The Mariners tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Bybee knocked a RBI single through the right side to score Frank Pierson from second.
Ramapo took a one run lead in the top of the fourth on a RBI single through the left side by Gaven. The Roadrunner took a 5-1 lead in the top of the fifth with three runs. The first run of the inning came in on a RBI double to left center by Della Serra. Mauriello drove in the next two runs on a two run homerun to left field.
In the top of the sixth, the Roadrunners plated two more runs to take a 7-1 lead over the Mariners. Gallagher drove in the first run for Ramapo on a RBI double to center field. Gallagher came around to score the second run of the inning on a RBI double to right center by Cacchiola.
USMMA plated its second run in the bottom of the seventh on a one out solo homerun to left field, 7-2. The Roadrunners were able to hold off a potential ninth inning scare to go on to the 7-2 victory over the Mariners.
The Mariners concluded their historic 2009 season with an overall record of 22-14 while breaking many school records.
