Captain William G. Fell, Jr. is currently the Deputy Athletics
Director at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He entered
into this role after serving as the 16th Commandant of Midshipmen
at Kings Point. He is also entering his third season as Cassie
Arroyo's assistant softball coach.
As Deputy A.D., Captain Fell's day-to-day tasks include: handling
the finances of the department, budgets of USMMA's 24 Division III
sports teams, assisting with and coordinating game-day management,
as well as other projects assisting Director of Athletics Susan
Petersen Lubow.
Captain Fell, a native of Rootstown, Ohio, graduated from the
United States Naval Academy in 1978 and was commissioned a Second
Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He then completed
Basic School and Combat Engineer Officers School, where he was the
first recipient of the Cornwall Leadership Award. Captain Fell then
reported to 9th Engineer Support Battalion in Okinawa Japan as
Platoon Commander and then “A” Company Executive
Officer.
In 1981 Captain Fell transferred to Marine Barracks Hawaii and
served as Guard Officer and then Commanding Officer, Guard Company
Pearl Harbor. Selected for career level school in 1985, he attended
the U.S. Army’s Engineer Officer Advanced Course at Fort
Belvoir Virginia. Upon graduation, Captain Fell reported to the 2nd
Combat Engineer Battalion and assumed duties as Commanding Officer
“A” Company. During this period “A” Company
deployed twice to Northern Norway for winter operations Anchor
Express and Alpine Warrior.
In 1988 Captain Fell reported to Battle Creek, Michigan as
Inspector-Instructor, 4th Bridge Company, 6th Engineer Support
Battalion and was later promoted to Major. 4th Bridge Company
became the first Marine Reserve unit sent to Operation Desert
Shield (later Operation Desert Storm). Two of the three years at
Battle Creek, 4th Bridge Company was selected as the number unit in
6th Engineer Support Battalion, and the number two unit in 4th FSSG
(out of 173). Captain Fell reported to 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in
1991 and served in various billets, Operations Officer and
Executive Officer MWSS-172, 1st MAW Engineer, and Operations
Officer MWSG-17. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, he participated in
Team Spirit and Cobra Gold. In 1995, Captain Fell reported to
Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow as the Facilities and Services
Officer and later as Deputy Commander.
Captain Fell retired from the United States military in 1998. His
individual awards include the Legion of Merit Medal, three Navy and
Marine Corps Commendation Medals and a Navy and Marine Corps
Achievement Medal.
After his retirement, Captain Fell taught high school science,
health and physical education at Grove City High School, Columbus,
Ohio. In June 2004, Captain Fell moved to Kings Point when he was
hired as the Assistant Athletic Director for Physical Fitness and
Club Sports at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Captain
Fell assumed duties as Deputy Commandant of Midshipmen in November
2007 and assumed command of the Regiment in July 2008 as the Acting
Commandant of Midshipmen. In June 2009, Captain Fell was selected
as the sixteenth Commandant of Midshipmen.
On March 28, 2011, Captain Fell became the Deputy Athletics
Director at Kings Point.
Athletically, Fell was a three-year member of the U.S. Naval
Academy football team, selected twice (1984, '85) to the USA
Military Select Rugby Team, captain of the 1986 U.S. Marine Corps
Rugby Team, and most recently assistant coach for the 2008 USMC
Rugby Team. He also was the USMMA assistant football coach
2005-2007 and boxing coach 2006-2008.
Having graduated in 1978 from the U.S. Naval Academy with a
Bachelor's degree in Management and Engineering, Captain Fell
earned a Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Troy State
University in 1993. He also acquired a certificate in Sports
Management program from the National Association of Collegiate
Directors of Athletics' (NACDA) Sports Management Institute.
Captain Fell is married to the former Deborah Haynes. The couple
has three children: Kimberly, Billy who attends Ohio State
University and Jeffrey a student at Yale University.
